The objective of the work in my lab is to develop models of the types of memory that are impaired in human diseases. This work involves development of a range of models, so that we have working models to evaluate elements of human memory in animals. My laboratory has developed a number of innovative techniques for evaluating cognition in rats, including prospective memory, episodic memory, what-where-when memory, source memory, retrieval practice, working memory, and metacognition. We seek to apply the models that we develop in translational models of human diseases of memory. My lab is currently applying an animal model of episodic memory protection in apolipoprotein E (APOE) knockout rats to model cognitive decline in aging and Alzheimer's disease.
