The Rebec Family Fellowship
Dr. George Rebec is a known name within the Psychology and Neuroscience programs here at Indiana University. He has been at IU since 1977, serving in those years both as the director of the Neuroscience program and as a professor. Recently, he has done something else for the program that is quite remarkable.
Dr. Rebec started the Rebec Family Fellowship about three years ago. The Rebec Fellowship helps graduate students in the Neuroscience program with finances that they may not already have covered. When asked about the fellowship, Dr. Rebec almost shrugs it off as if it is no big deal.
“I provided some money, IU banks it, and then the interest is used each year to help students financially,” he explained.
He did not specify just how much money he provided to begin this fellowship. Graduate school is expensive and while many students receive stipends and scholarships, they do not always cover the extra cost of living. The interest that is made on the money that Dr. Rebec supplied is provided to the students. It can be used to pay for school, to pay bills, to buy necessities, or whatever the students need it for. This really helps students, taking away some stress so they can focus on their research.
Not only does it help the students, it helps the program itself too.
“This fellowship provides more opportunity and helps bring in more students and stronger students,” Dr. Rebec said.
The Indiana University Program in Neuroscience is over 50 years old. The program is still building and striving to be the best. Dr. Rebec is still dedicated to the program he worked so hard to build.
